Piccalilli Newsletter - Issue #34

Welcome permalink

Howdy đź‘‹

This week has been a week and it is only Tuesday…

If you’re like me, you’re probably incredibly anxious, so let’s try and take our minds of the pandemic for a while and enjoy some truly wonderful work from around the web.

Pure CSS Landscape - An Evening in Southwold

A pure CSS seaside landscape which looks like watercolours

Ben is at it again with their stunning, realistic CSS art. I really like how with this one, you can make a huge impact on the whole composition just by changing the colour of the sun.

Elastic Lampshade

⚠️ Motion Warning ⚠️

A black and white sketchy looking lampshade on a hot pink background

Ilithya has a habit of bringing my MacBook to its knees with their incredibly creative work, but I love it. This piece is no different!

The aesthetic of this piece is on point. You should also check our their stunning website.

Nice sites permalink

Roze Bunker

⚠️ Motion Warning ⚠️

A combination of hand-drawn design, solid bright colours and photography make an interesting product page

I’m really bored of product sites with a left-hand heading, summary and “get started” button with an illustration on the right hand side, based on a purple colour palette.

This site couldn’t be any further than that, though! There’s lot’s of great details to obsess over. Lovely stuff.

Trent Walton - Audio

A super vintage looking site with a distressed background image of cosmonaut

Everything Trent touches is gold and this is no different. This audio experiment is great with some really lovely music. The aesthetic is absolutely stunning, too.

Glitch for remote work

A high contrast page hero with bubble shapes and a hand-drawn graphic

I’ve always been a massive fan of Glitch’s branding. It’s so bold. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that this site is both visually stunning and good as heck.

Fancy permalink

Slinky Text - WHOA Variable font demo

"slinky" in a very slinky variable font

Mandy, the variable font maestro strikes again! I’ve had this link in my satchel for ages and I just knew it would sit well with this issue, so I finally got it out.

I love the demos that Mandy makes, so much.

Heartwarming permalink

Take care

⚠️ Motion Warning ⚠️

"take care of yourselves out there" in text pokes out of a dashed pink heart

We really needed this today, Michelle. Thank you.

Fun permalink

Text Loading Animation

⚠️ Motion Warning ⚠️

3 rings of white text on a purple background

I could sit and watch this for hours. Lovely work!

Isometric City with Airplane

A colourful 3D city has a plane flying around it

In the old version of the newsletter, I joked that it should have a “cobra_winfrey” category and that hasn’t changed, because Adam always finds his way in here with his brilliant work.

This piece, as always, is great.

Layout Collab : Stax Records

A vintage wood background with a spinning turntable in the top right. A heading that looks burnt into the wood says 'stay records'

This project is cool as heck. I really wanted to get involved with it when Steve put it together, but I was stacked with other work at the time.

It reminds me of the classic, CSS Zen Garden.

That’s all, folks permalink

There’s a lot of panic at the moment, pals, and I just want to say that I’m here with you too and thinking of those of you heavily impacted. Look after yourselves and importantly, each other. I’ll keep pushing out these newsletters to hopefully bring you a bit of weekly joy.

I’ve created a Piccalilli Community which I hope will be a nice place for us to hang out and chat about the web. I’ve also created a Discord server for folks to hang out. Lots of people are suddenly working from home, so I hope this group will help reduce some of the isolation.

Until the next issue, take it easy.
